Interracial Couples

  • You two come from very different backgrounds and that creates issues
  • Difficulties in negotiating each other’s need and points-of-view
  • Differences in child-rearing beliefs are always creating tension
  • Feeling like fish-out-of-water around your in-laws
  • Religious and cultural differences have been overwhelming

Typical Presenting Issues:

Changes in your life are overwhelming. Life and relationships are difficult to manage.

You may be thinking that you “should” be stronger and not let things bother you so why do they?

Your marriage has a lot of challenges and you and your spouse do not see eye-to-eye. Each of you has changed over the years and your needs are different now.

Family and in-laws' pressures are mounting up and you do not see how things will ever get better.

Feelings and needs are never talked about and forget about sexuality, that is a total taboo subject.

You have same-sex attraction and that is a subject that even you have a tough time acknowledging to yourself let alone talk to anyone else about.

You have become an expert at pretending that everything is great.

Your desire to be perceived as being “perfect” at everything is making you more anxious each day. You feel like an imposter and there is no way out.

You, or someone you know is lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender and is presenting with some unique issues because of their sexuality or are not being accepted and treated properly.

Navigating life as an LGBTQ+ person has taken its toll and relationships are suffering.

Cultural and social demands are too much to handle. You need a safe place to talk about the issues, find acceptance and a path forward.

You may be challenged with some of the issues listed above or have some other ones. Bottomline, you do not need to continue to suffer in silence. I understand your predicament and am here to help. Take the first step and contact me and let us see how we can work together in a non-judgmental and encouraging environment where I will try to understand your situation, partner with you in setting goals and collaborate each step of the way so you feel supported.

About Me:

Growing up in South Asia and living most of my adult life in the United States and some years in Latin America, I understand the challenges of someone caught between two (or more) cultures and/or being part of a minority group. The Difference between Coaching and Counseling...

...and why Coaching is not usually covered by Insurance.

Coaching and counseling are two distinct forms of support for personal and professional development.

Coaching

Coaching is a future-oriented process that focuses on goal-setting, performance improvement, and the pursuit of future-oriented solutions. Coaches work alongside clients to identify objectives, break them down into manageable steps, and develop actionable plans to achieve them. Coaching does not involve diagnosing or treating mental health conditions.

Counseling

Counseling, on the other hand, is a therapeutic process that promotes mental and emotional well-being, resolves personal challenges, and fosters self-understanding. It often addresses past experiences, unresolved trauma, and current struggles with mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, or PTSD. Counseling is regulated by state licensing laws, meaning therapists can only work with clients in the states where they are licensed.

Insurance

Insurance coverage for coaching is not common because it does not address mental health diagnoses or emotional disorders. Insurance typically covers services that are evidence-based and rooted in psychological research, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or psychodynamic therapy. Since coaching does not involve these types of treatments, it is not covered by health insurance plans.

What Will Success Look Like:

We will schedule our initial session and assess your current situation and presenting issues. We will set your goals together. We will meet on a regular basis (typically weekly) and work on those goals. We will see how you are doing and make changes as needed. We will celebrate your successes along the way. We will terminate our work together when your goals are met.

Generally, my clients stay in therapy for at least 6 months to a year. My coaching clients with specific concerns may be seen for 3 to 6 months.

Alma

Alma’s core service is making it easier for individuals and families to access therapy—especially affordable, in‑network care.

  • Therapist directory: Alma offers a large, searchable database of licensed therapists, allowing users to filter by specialty (e.g., anxiety, LGBTQIA+, medication management).
  • Insurance integration: Alma emphasizes helping clients use their insurance. People who find care through Alma save an average of 77% on therapy costs by accessing in‑network providers.
  • Better therapist matching: Its directory provides more detailed therapist profiles than typical insurance portals, helping users find a provider who fits their needs and preferences.

In short, Alma simplifies the process of finding a therapist who accepts your insurance and aligns with your goals.

Headway

Sondermind

Headway’s main goal is to make therapy affordable and easy to access by focusing on in‑network care.

  • Find in‑network therapists and psychiatrists — Users enter their insurance information and get matched with providers who accept it.
  • Lower costs — Clients often pay as low as $0 per session, with an average savings of 75% compared to paying out of pocket.
  • Large provider network — Over 65,000 licensed providers across the U.S. are available on the platform.
  • Supports therapy and medication management — Headway includes both therapists and psychiatrists (though medication availability varies by provider).
  • Simple booking and billing — Headway processes all insurance claims and payments so clients don’t have to navigate insurance portals.

Headway is especially useful for people who want in‑network care, prefer transparent pricing, or find insurance directories too difficult to navigate.
